Public Works
The Public Works Department is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the essential services that support daily life in Mount Carmel. Our team oversees the upkeep of streets, public rights-of-way, grounds, buildings, and other vital infrastructure. We also provide additional services such as large item pickup, brush removal, and seasonal leaf collection.
Covering approximately 6.65 square miles, Mount Carmel includes over 100 streets all maintained to ensure safety, efficiency, and reliability for residents and visitors alike.
Our crew works year-round to support safe transportation and deliver seasonal services such as snow removal and street sweeping. We take pride in preserving the town’s appearance, responding promptly to maintenance issues and emergencies, and planning proactively to meet future needs. Through dedicated service, Public Works helps keep Mount Carmel clean, connected, and running smoothly.
The Town of Mount Carmel is committed to maintaining a clean and safe environment for all residents. As part of this effort, the Public Works Department provides regular brush, leaf, and grass clippings collection services.
- Frequency: Daily collection by route, ensuring every street within city limits is serviced within a one-month period.
- Brush Guidelines:
- Tree brush must be less than 14 feet in length and 14 inches in diameter.
- Leaf & Grass Clipping Guidelines:
- Must be bagged when out of season for vacuum truck collection.
- During vacuum truck season, leaves and clippings should be placed curbside and free of trash, limbs, or other debris.
The Town also provides special collection of large household items on a monthly rotating route.
Accepted Items Include:
- Appliances: stoves, refrigerators, water tanks, washing machines, dryers
- Furniture: mattresses, bedsprings, couches
- Oversized cardboard boxes
The following items will not be collected:
- Contractor debris
- Overflow household trash
- Tires, oil, antifreeze, vehicle parts, batteries
- Paint, carpet, bricks, construction materials
- Microwaves, air conditioners, concrete, shingles
- Any hazardous materials or items restricted by the Hawkins County Landfill
Important Note: If prohibited items are found at the curb, the property owner will be notified and responsible for removal. Failure to comply may result in code enforcement citations.
Garbage collection in Mount Carmel is contracted through the City of Kingsport. Residents are provided with one garbage cart at no cost.
Service Details:
- Regular collection occurs Monday through Friday.
- Carts should be placed at the curb no earlier than 24 hours before pickup.
Items Not Accepted:
- Batteries, paint, gas tanks, hazardous liquids, and infectious materials.
